Total tea production of the country, the second largest tea producer of the world, in 2011 was 243.62 million kgs. The production was down by 27.79 million kgs during the first five months of the current calendar year compared to the corresponding period last year, mainly due to unfavourable weather conditions. The downward trend in the brew production is visible in both north and south India. According to a data on estimated tea production during the first five months of 2012, released by the Tea Board of India, production of the country's favourite brew in north and south India was down 2 million kgs and 1.6 million kgs respectively against the same period of 2011.
During the month of May this year, total tea production of the country was down 3.6 million kgs compared to same month last year.
